Preventing sporting injuries isn’t always as easy as we say it is. The common ways that injuries happen are; doing too much too quickly, lack of preparation/poor technique, pushing your body too hard (over-training) & poor equipment/safety gear.

Here are some easy tips and tricks you can do to help prevent these sporting injuries.

  • Warm Up and Cool Down.

This must be first on my list because it is one of the most important tips you can give. Warmups are designed to increase your heart rate and body temperature, making your muscles more flexible. Cool downs give your body a chance to return to its resting state, which will help to prevent blood pooling and cramping.

  • Regularly Stretching

Stretching helps to increase range of motion, flexibility and blood flow to the muscles, recommended to stretch all major muscle groups 2-3 times per week.

  • Right Protective Equipment.

Wearing the proper protective equipment.  is crucial for preventing injuries. Additionally, make sure all the equipment is fitted correctly.

  • Stay Hydrated

It has been recommended by American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) that athletes should drink 17-20 ounces of water 2-3 hours before exercises, 7-10 ounces of water every 10-20 minutes during exercises. Keeping hydrated can help reduce symptoms such as fatigue, soreness, cramps and spasms.

  • Avoid Overdoing Training

Most comment injuries within sports as spoken about on Tuesday occur because of overtraining/overuse. To avoid these sorts of injuries, it’s important to gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.

Seeing a sport therapist, physiotherapist, or sport medicine doctor regularly can help prevent injuries by allowing YOU to catch any problems early on. It can be extremely important to seek help and support for a sporting injury as soon as possible, if left untreated, a small injury can quickly turn into much more which could cause you to be out for longer.
